Abstract
The monocellular layer of stripped unrolled lens capsule epithelium has proved to be well fitted for optical and histochemical investigation. In such prepns. three different zones of the epithelium have been distinguished. Between a large central and a peripheral transitional zone, consisting of the primordium of the lens fibers, a border zone is seen. The border zone exhibited a marked response to the Feulgen reaction and Elnarson''s gallocyanin method. It also snowed the greatest acid and alkaline phosphatase activity. The acid phosphatase had an optimum at about pH 4.5 to 5.0, and the alkaline at about 9.5. The existence of an interval without phosphatase reactions was observed. Both the acid and the alkaline phosphatase reactions mainly occurred in the nuclei. The small retractile particles in the nuclei were seen to possess the most powerful alkaline phosphatase activity.
