Abstract
How good is the case for an infectious etiology in rheumatoid and other arthritides? The best evidence remains indirect: the many aspects of pathology that are most logically explained in terms of response to infection. As the search for direct evidence continues, one can probably rule out a bacterial but not a viral or mycoplasmal etiology. New techniques may be needed for the study of the latter.
