Abstract
The U.V. and I.R. spectral data of 4‐aryl‐3,5‐diethoxycarbonyl‐2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridines with different aryl substituents are discussed. The λmax values of the long‐wavelength absorption band in the U.V. spectra show a similar solvent dependence for all the compounds. (The results indicate a more polar state of the chromophore in the excited state). The variations induced by different 4‐aryl substituents are correlated with the electronic effects of these substituents. The I.R. stretching vibrations of the bonds in the chromophoric system are not influenced by the 4‐R‐substituents.Keywords
