Duration of Feeding by Larvae of the Hessian Fly1 and Growth of Susceptible Wheat Seedlings2,3

Abstract
Larvae of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), that were allowed to feed for 2—48 h after they were placed as 1st instars on susceptible wheat seedlings, did not cause significant stunting or reduction in leaf growth. Similar larvae allowed to feed for 72 h caused a small degree of stunting of the 2nd and 3rd leaf of the plants, and larvae that fed for 96—120 h caused a greater degree of stunting. Permanent stunting occurred when the larvae fed for 144 h.
