Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: Inefficacity of Treatment With Metronidazole

Abstract
To the Editor.— It was with great interest that we read the recent reports about successful treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with orally administered metronidazole.1,2 Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in our region of the world and any simple and safe form of therapy that is rapidly effective and easily administered would be of considerable value. We, therefore, decided to try this medication on some of our patients. Six consecutive patients were given oral metronidazole according to the schedule suggested by Long.1 Three of the patients had nodular lesions, two had nodular-ulcerative lesions, and in one patient, the lesions were papular. The duration of the lesions was two months in three cases, three months in two cases, and six months in one case. The diagnosis was confirmed in all cases by positive smears and cultures.
