Abstract
The theories of venous return to the heart are reviewed. To evaluate venous return to normal human hearts, four parameters were recorded simultaneously: pressure in the right atrium and the right ventricle, ECG and flow pattern in the superior vena cava. A typical normal flow pattern in the vein was recorded. In human hearts with arrhythmias and tricuspid insufficiency, pathological patterns were obtained. Intraoperative recording of a flow pattern in the superior vena cava will probably give more accurate information about tricuspid insufficiency.
