Abstract
571The World Wide Web is fast becoming the de facto repository for on-line information. Yet, Web technology has inadvertently created barriers for people with disabilities. The World Wide Web Consortium co-ordinates the evolution of the Web core protocols (Hypertext Markup Language, Cascading Style Sheets, Extensible Markup Language, Hypertext Transfer Protocol, etc.) and has a mission to “lead the Web to its full potential”. As of 1997, World Wide Web Consortium has taken on a new leadership role in removing these accessibility barriers and, to that effect, has launched the Web Accessibility Initiative. This chapter addresses the issue of accessibility to the Web by all potential users, and outlines current and on-going activities carried out by the World Wide Web Consortium Web Accessibility Initiative in this direction. Keywords
