Abstract
We investigate the origin of the radial orbit instability, and we show, both analytically and numerically, that its origin lies in the transformation of loop orbits into box orbits. We also show that, in order to obtain a complete description of the radial orbit instability, it is necessary to include the effect of chaotic motion. Keywords
