Morphological Variation of Setaria faberii and S. viridis

Abstract
Fourteen morphological characteristics ofSetaria faberii andS. viridis were investigated in wild populations and in plants grown in a greenhouse under uniform treatments. Five quantitative and one qualitative characteristic, with a difference in chromosome number, proved satisfactory for distinguishing these two species. The quantitative data are presented in tables which include the ‘t’ values.S. viridis is a diploid species (2n=18), andS. faberii is a tetraploid species (2n=36). The data indicated thatS. faberii was probably introduced within a onehundred mile radius of New York City in the 1920’s. A map showing the distribution ofS. faberii in New Jersey is included.
