Abstract
Human salivary conditioning was investigated with Razran''s absorbent cotton technique. Measures were taken, before and after training, of salivation to cotton alone, to a Cryst-O-Mint life saver, to a buzzer, and to combined stimulation. The training series included 12 trials of combined stimulation, and the substitute stimulus was omitted from the training series in a control experiment. A conditioned salivary response to the buzzer was not obtained. Training with combined stimulation increased salivation to combined stimulation but not to mint or buzzer alone. Training with the original stimulus had no such differential effect. The data suggest that the experimental and control procedures may also have had differential effects on the variability of the salivary response.
