Abstract
The trend in Britain is toward rather heavier thinnings made less frequently, and this makes necessary careful choice of the trees retained. The trees to favour are those that produce the greatest quantity of wood for the space they occupy. Genetical and physiological knowledge is used to suggest that close attention should be paid to crown length and width, density of foliage and seed production in attempting to select the most efficient trees.
