Abstract
Hydrolysis of urinary formaldehydogenic substances by a bacterial beta glucuronidase was studied. Maximum liberation of formaldehydogenic material was obtained when 50 cc. of urine was incubated with 3200 units of the enzyme obtained from Escherichia coli. Parallel detns. with and without enzymatic hydrolysis have been performed on 34 urine samples from normal individuals, patients without adrenal disease and patients with adrenal cortical disease. There was no evident correlation between the formaldehydogenic steroids of the unhydrolyzed and hydrolyzed urine samples. The fact that two patients with Addison''s disease excreted large amts. of formaldehydogenic material following enzymatic hydrolysis suggests that this material may not all be of adrenal origin. Keywords
