Cloze after thirty years: new uses in language teaching

Abstract
1983 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the cloze procedure. The following notes, written from the combined perspectives of a psychologist and a linguist, first briefly sketch the psychological foundations and linguistic implications of cloze . Basic approaches and terms as well as a condensed view of cloze as a test are given for background information. The main focus of the article is on new uses of cloze as a versatile teaching device in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Several modifications of cloze exercises are introduced, discussed, and exemplified.
