Abstract
The gauge group supplemented by quark-lepton, left-right, and generation discrete symmetries represents a new approach to the understanding of the particle content of the standard model. In particular, as a result of the large number of symmetries, the fermion sector of the model is very simple. After symmetry breaking, the standard model can be shown to emerge from this highly symmetric model at low energies.
