Abstract
This paper reviews the most relevant therapeutic results achieved by the Milan Cancer Institute through successive randomized studies in advanced Hodgkin's disease. The experience achieved confirms the therapeutic importance of an anthracycline-containing regimen such as ABVD (doxorubicin/bleomycin/vinblastine/dacarbazine) as salvage treatment and as primary chemotherapy, either when combined with irradiation or cyclically alternated with MOPP (mechlorethamine/vincristine/procarbazine/prednisone). Anthracycline-based combinations can be further refined to decrease toxicity. The biologic aspects of drug-sensitive v drug-resistant tumor cells and the accurate definition of prognostic categories at the time of first treatment failure are also discussed. Keywords
