After years of discussion, the system of training resident physicians in the United States is about to undergo substantial changes. As of July 1, 2003, more — but not all — residents will be limited to 80 hours of work per week, averaged over a four-week period.1,2 The new requirements are part of a general effort to improve the safety of patients and the working conditions and education of residents.
