Abstract
As part of the task of defining the purpose and approach of the AWAVS human performance research program, the application of advanced experimental methods are explained and illustrated. The general AWAVS research philosophy is discussed, particularly in regard to the relative effectiveness of single versus multifactor experiments. Performance studies to be done in the AWAVS simulator are described and a fictitious numerical example of how economical multifactor designs would be used is presented. 'Quasi-transfer' experiments in the simulator are proposed to study the relationship between transfer and simulator fidelity as a composite concept rather than an entity. Some untried methods of performing multifactor transfer of training experiments more economically are suggested. (Author)
