Abstract
Several types of failure observed in tin plate containers are described in terms of tin-steel potential and current relationships. The effect of Sn++ on potentials and polarization of tin and steel electrodes in de-aerated 1N HCl and 0.1M citrate buffer is shown to be important to proper design of electrochemical test methods. Potential and polarization measurements indicate that inhibition by Sn++ is not a plating-out process. Hydrogen diffusion experiments suggest a relationship between hydrogen diffusion and inhibition by Sn++. Polarization studies have identified the iron-tin alloy as an important factor in tin plate corrosion. 3.8.2, 6.3.14, 3.6.8Keywords
