Evaluation of Corneal Endothelial Damage using Correlated Microscopy Techniques (With 1 color plate)

Abstract
An evaluation of three cytochemical stains indicates that the most information regarding the condition of damaged corneal endothelial cells can be obtained through the combined use of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) and ruthenium red (RR). The sequential use of these stains on fresh (NBT) and then fixed (RR) tissue identifies the condition of the cell membrane as well as the extent of cellular damage in macrophotographic, light microscopic and electron microscopic preparations.
