The Immune Response of Mice to Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin Bound to Macrophages

Abstract
Summary: A comparison was made of the immune response to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) administered either in free form or after uptake by macrophages. It was found that either in the primary response or when priming for a secondary challenge, free KLH was more immunogenic than macrophage-bound KLH. These results should be compared with others using weaker immunogens, wherein the macrophage-bound antigen was more immunogenic than the free antigen. The effect of macrophages in the immune response appears to depend upon the type of antigen used.
