Abstract
The specific heats of palladium and of a series of dilute Pd(Dy) alloys were measured in the 0.5-6-K range. Two large contributions to the alloy specific heat were observed. One was due to splitting of the Dy-ion ground state by the crystal field of the Pd matrix. The other was related to clustering of the solute which leads to superparamagnetic behavior.
