Inferior Vena Cavography in the Detection of Abdominal Extension of Pelvic Cancer

Abstract
A simplified method of inferior vena cavography performed in conjunction with and as a part of excretory urography is used to discover the extent of malignant neoplasms in the pelvis, as carcinoma of the cervix, uterus, colon, and prostate. Because of the anatomic relationships, opacification of the inferior vena cava may be used to evaluate the retroperitoneal space. Several cases are described in which tumor was thought to be confined to the pelvis, but retroperitoneal metastatic deposits were found. Seven of the 9 cases presented revealed metastatic spread of the primary neoplasm which was unsuspected prior to inferior vena cavography. Pre- and post-therapy examinations have been used to evaluate the results of treatment.
