Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of affective social support, locus of control, and selected factors on depression in the elderly. This study was based on the conceptual framework that social support and control may substitute for one another to decrease depression. Perception of touch, as a measure of affective social support, significantly contributed to reducing depression after controlling for the subjects' initial preference for privacy. The findings support the view that affective social support may be used by caregivers in the nursing home setting as a substitute for residents' inability to control their environment. Keywords
