Abstract
The infusion of a large quantity of plasma expander over several days in rabbits produces dilution anemia characterized by decreased erythrocyte concentration and unchanged erythrocyte volume. This pseudo-anemia, like true anemia, stimulates erythropoiesis resulting in a sharp increase in reticulocytes and finally a polyglobulia and increase of erythrocyte volume. The polyglobulia in turn inhibits erythropoiesis as indicated by the reduction of erythroblasts in the bone marrow and of reticulocytes in the blood. The original values for erythrocyte count and blood volume are regained only after several weeks. The life span of erythrocytes remains unchanged during the experiment. The implications of these findings for regulation of erythropoiesis and the relationship between concentration and total number of cells are discussed. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
