Linking Instruction and Assessment in the Mathematics Classroom

Abstract
Ms. Howard posed the following question to her students: “If thirty-two game cards are used by students in one class and forty-nine game cards are used by students in another class, how many cards would be used?” As she looks around the room, she observes Kenny using base-ten blocks to solve the problem. He methodically counts 3 tens and 2 ones to form 32. He then finds 4 tens and 9 ones to show 49.
