Abstract
The performance of the most recent form of Arealometer has been tested on a wide range of world's cottons. In addition to measuring specific surface, the instrument can be used to obtain an accurate value of mean whole-fibre weight per unit length and also a practically useful index of maturity. It has been shown, however, that for the determination of these latter two quantities, only raw cotton samples can be examined successfully. Cotton that has been mechanically processed yields incorrect results for reasons that need further investigation. Keywords
