Further studies of the optical polarization in the jet of 3C 273

Abstract
A linear polarization map of the jet of 3C 273 in the R-waveband is presented. We confirm the previous results of Scarrot & Warren-Smith in which significant levels of polarization oriented approximately perpendicular to the jet axis were detected throughout the visible jet. We now find some structure in the polarization pattern of the jet; in particular, there are rapid changes in polarization position angle beyond the bright knot at the extremity of the optical jet. This behaviour is very similar to that observed at radio wave-lengths. The radiation from the jet at wavelengths longwards of the R-waveband has a synchrotron origin.
