Eloflux Fuel Cells and Electrolysis Cells

Abstract
In recent years in a corporation of the VARTA research and development centre in Kelkheim and the University of Kassel, a new kind of Eloflux fuel cell and electrolysis cell system was developed. This alkaline hydrogen‐oxygen system is a continuation of the VARTA fuel cell system with sinter‐nickel electrodes of the 1960's. The decisive progress, was the development of the new Raney‐Nickel hydrogen electrode with its simple and inexpensive manufacturing technique in 1983. Together with a new oxygen‐electrode of the same kind, we built within the scope of the Hermes fuel cell project different types of Eloflux fuel cells in 1988. First Eloflux electrolysis cells, which have the same design and similar electrodes as the fuel cells, were made last year.—This report deals with the manufacturing and the characteristics of the electrodes, with the principle of Eloflux cells and with the characteristics of the latest fuel cells, electrolysis cells and electrolyte reconcentrators.
