Quantifying an Ambulatory Care Patient Classification Instrument

Abstract
The author describes the process used to develop a patient classification system in a large multi-specialty ambulatory care facility. The process involved identifying critical indicators for each specialty area, validating the instruments, and calculating the workload. The approach to sampling and the problems encountered for relatively short visits are discussed.
