Abstract
There is present in saliva an ammonia-producing mechanism which produces 5-10 times the amt. of ammonia originally present on incubation for 24 hrs. at 37[degree]C. NaF and glucose were found to have an inhibitory effect on ammonia production. Urea added to saliva increases ammonia production, indicating the presence of a urease in saliva. The ammonia producing mechanism is removed by filtering the saliva through a Seitz filter. Keywords
