Abstract
An approximate expression proposed recently for the chemical potential of a lattice gas with arbitrarily complex two-body interactions is rederived via a formal cluster expansion for the mean entropy, thus providing clear insight into the nature of the approximation. It is shown that the approximation belongs to the class of generalized cluster-variation methods. The presence of a hidden assumption of unknown validity and impact is pointed out. Keywords
