Automatic Gain Control for Photomultiplier Tubes

Abstract
When using a photomultiplier to scan photographs of bubble chamber tracks or other dark signals on a light background, the output signal one obtains depends strongly on the intensity of the background. In this paper we describe and analyze an automatic gain control circuit that helps to remove this dependency. The circuit is both simple and transistorized. Furthermore, it can adjust its gain within microseconds to a large increase in light background.
