Korean Elders in the United States: Intergenerational Relations and Living Arrangements

Abstract
A sample of Korean elders aged 60 and over residing in the New York City area were interviewed with regard to their living arrangements, service needs, and orientation to filial and formal support systems. Comparison with available data on elders in South Korea revealed changes have occurred in inter-generational relations and living arrangements for older Koreans in the U.S. The findings suggest that both Korean elders and their adult children in the U.S. have accepted a pattern of coexistence more characteristic of the U.S. than of Korea.
