Treatment of the Morbidly Obese Patient with Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Abstract
Laparoscopic gastric banding is a recently introduced operation for the treatment of morbid obesity. Its main advantages are minimal invasiveness of the operative procedure, postoperative adjustability of the band, and complete reversibility of the installation. Fourteen female patients with average body weights of 120.2 ± 22.0 kg (X ± SD), body mass index 46.5 ± 8.6kg/m2, and excess weight of 65.4 ± 21.4 kg were treated between 23.5.95 and 22.7.96. Duration of operation was 177.5 ± 16.5 min. Conversion to open surgery was never necessary. Postoperative hospital stay was 4.6 ± 2.1 days. Postoperative mortality was zero. There were only minor complications. Postoperative weight loss in kg and excess weight loss in % was 4.7 ± 1.5 kg or 7.7 ± 1.9% at 2weeks,6.4 ± 2.3 kg or 10.4 ± 3.2% at 1 month, 8.8 ± 2.4 kg or 14.8 ± 3.8% at 2 months, 11.6 ± 3.9 kg or 19.2 ± 5.1% at 3 months, 15.5 ± 4.9 kg or 26.6 ± 10.1% at 6 months, 19.4 ± 6.3kg or 29.9 ± 11.2% at 9 months and 23.2 ± 8.7 kg or 35.8 ± 15.2% at 1 year, respectively. We conclude that LAGB is a truly minimally invasive and relatively simple operation for the effective treatment of morbid obesity with very few complications.
