Abstract
When the University Grants Committee gave the Secretary of State for Education and Science its advice on a strategy for higher education in the 1990s, it considered, among many other important issues, the problems facing the universities in the funding of research. The continued erosion of resources for technical and secretarial support and the escalation of costs of equipment, consumable materials and library resources are having a depressing effect on the whole of research – dramatically so in many areas of science and engineering.
