Abstract
Homogenates of Fasciola hepatica, freshly removed from naturally infected ovine livers, were analyzed for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Evidence is presented that AChE was present. Discharged intestinal contents of the fluke, examined separately, apparently contained AChE. Homogenates of liver flukes containing their intestinal contents hydrolyzed more acetylcholine (ACh) than those without ingesta. The properties of the parasite''s enzyme were studied with chemical inhibitors, varied substrate concentrations, and high speed centrifugation. Analysis of substrate hydrolysis was done radioisotopically with use of acetyl-1-14C-choline iodine. Substrate hydrolysis rates were also measured manometrically. Weight or size of the parasite was not proportional to the rate of substrate hydrolysis. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
