Postnatal Changes in the Pituitary-Adrenal Axis of the Rat

Abstract
Compensatory adrenal hypertrophy following unilateral adrenalectomy was studied in rats from day 2 to day 30 of life. The response followed a biphasic pattern, being 18.2% on day 2, 4.5% on day 7 and 20.0% by day 30. Intermediate ages showed values intermediate to these. When 2, 7 and 21 day old rats were tested for adrenal hypertrophy following ACTH injection, a biphasic curve was again found, with a peak at day 7. The diminished response to compensatory hypertrophy on day 7 linked with greater sensitivity to exogenous ACTH indicates that the endogenous ACTH is absent or greatly diminished in this animal.This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
