Abstract
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic, medically incurable inflammatory bowel diseases. Most patients with these disorders are treated at some point with systemic corticosteroids. The short-term response to corticosteroids may be gratifying, but the long-term effects can be so severe that the treatment is often worse than the disease.The ideal treatment for inflammatory bowel disease would therefore be a “magic bullet” that could induce clinical remissions as effectively as traditional corticosteroids without having as many side effects.
