Familial Cirrhosis

Abstract
Eight families have been studied in whom 2 or more members have histologically proven cirrhosis of the liver. Eighteen family members have biopsy demonstrated cirrhosis and 7 additional members have biochemical and clinical evidence of similar disease. The histological features of the disease within a family are quite similar. The material was studied prospectively for known inborn errors of metabolism associated with cirrhosis and none were found. Hepatitis, alcohol and chemicals are discussed as possible etio-logical agents. It is concluded that there is a genetic factor in these families accounting for the multiple cases of cirrhosis.
