Abstract
A fully automated biological monitoring system, employing sensor fish locomotory behaviour pattern response to intoxication, has been installed at a pulp and paper mill (SAPPI KRAFT LTD.) at Mandini, Natal, South Africa. This system detects insidious toxic conditions in the effluent discharge. The installation and operation of the system are discussed, and the environmental and industrial benefits to be gained from the use of such systems assessed. Installation and operation costs are presented and the necessity for future research examined. Keywords
