Gender Differences Through Two Years of Bereavement Among the Elderly

Abstract
The bereavement process of elderly male and female surviving spouses was compared in a 2-year longitudinal study. Bereaved persons (n = 192) between the ages of 50 and 93 completed mailed and interview questionnaires at six time periods following the spouse's death. MANOVA tests with repeated measures were carried out on five global outcome scales derived by factor analysis and on depression and life satisfaction. No statistically significant differences at any of the time periods indicate that their bereavement processes were characterized more by similarities than differences.
