Abstract
Assertiveness as a learned behavior throughout psychosocial development is discussed, and examples of experiences that impair this learning are presented. Passivity, aggressiveness, and assertiveness are considered in relation to the fight-flight mechanisms and to feelings of anger and anxiety. The problems encountered by hospitalized patients are described, along with the ways nurses deal with these problems. Keywords
