Effects of Median Nerve Injury on Some Digital Tissues of the Hand of the Macaque

Abstract
Median nerve injury experiments in Macaca fascicularis showed a reciprocal decrease and increase in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (ChE) activity in the digital Meissner’s corpuscles during degeneration and regeneration. During degeneration AChE activity was absent but became abundant during early regeneration of the nerve endings and slowly declined to normal during late regeneration. In contrast, ChE activity remained unchanged during early degeneration but showed a progressive decline during early regeneration and became intense in late regeneration. Experiments involving arterial and nerve section gave results that suggest the presence of a small periarterial neural contribution to the digital sweat glands.
