Abstract
In this paper the decay of axisymmetric turbulence is investigated. Explicit solutions, appropriate for the final period of decay, are obtained; these solutions are in agreement with Batchelor’s general results on the role of the big eddies in homogeneous turbulence. It is further shown that, compatible with the equations which have been derived for axisymmetric turbulence, a state of turbulence exists which may be pictured as a superposition of two non-interacting fields which are isotropic and axisymmetric, respectively. Keywords
