Anomalous Scattering in the Crab Nebula

Abstract
During 1974, the width of the pulses from the Crab Nebula pulsar, PSR 0531 + 21, has increased by a factor of 10 at 408 MHz. It is shown that this is probably due to multipath scattering causing a 100-fold increase in the pulse broadening. The form of the broadening function is irregular and changes on a time scale of a few days. There is evidence that the scattering is due to an increase in turbulence within the Crab Nebula. Over this same period the radio intensity of the pulses has been remarkably low and it is suggested that the enhanced scattering is connected with this.
