Abstract
The variational principle of Jones and Sondheimer is applied to a thin film to discuss its reflective and transmissive properties in a constant magnetic wave at optical frequencies. First, generalized admittance tensors are defined via the variational integral, and the reflection and transmission tensors found in terms of these. Then the reflectivity, transmittivity, absorptivity, and Voigt effect are treated for a simple case with parallel to the surfaces of the film, and the effect of surface collisions on these is discussed.
