Abstract
It may be said in general that Starling''s law of the heart, which is an established and valid relationship in the isolated mammalian heart, appears in the intact animal and in clinical states chiefly under circumstances where nervous, chemical or hormonal influences are not operating in such a way as to dominate cardiac performance. These are usually either (1) quiet states of the cardiovascular apparatus, relatively free from nonmechanical stimuli, or (2) states of severe or extreme stress where nervous or hormonal effects are no longer in control. Keywords
