Abstract
The optical absorption and emission spectra, 4f energy levels, fluorescence lifetime, and quantum efficiency of Yb3+ ions in YAlO3 are reported. Fluorescence kinetics and Nd3+Yb3+ energy transfer were studied as a function of temperature in crystals codoped with Yb3+ and Nd3+. Back transfer from Yb3+ to Nd3+ becomes important for Yb3+ relaxation at temperatures 200K. The rate and efficiency of Nd3+Yb3+ energy transfer in YAlO3 are determined and compared with results for other materials. Stimulated-emission cross sections, Cr3+Nd3+Yb3+ sensitization schemes, and possible Yb3+ laser action are also discussed.
