Abstract
The optical absorption and emission spectra, energy levels, fluorescence lifetime, and quantum efficiency of ions in YAl are reported. Fluorescence kinetics and energy transfer were studied as a function of temperature in crystals codoped with and . Back transfer from to becomes important for relaxation at temperatures . The rate and efficiency of energy transfer in YAl are determined and compared with results for other materials. Stimulated-emission cross sections, sensitization schemes, and possible laser action are also discussed.
