Abstract
A method is given for obtaining a power series expansion in the wavelength for the Rayleigh wave velocity in a half‐space whose density ρ and elastic constants λ and μ are functions of depth. This is followed by a discussion of the Rayleigh wave problem in media where λ = μ and μ(z) and ρ(z) are special cases of the type (ρ/ρ0) = (μ/μ0) = A cosh2 (α+βz).
