Abstract
The appearance of this excellent translation only four years after the original publication is to be welcomed by any serious student of Marx or our times. We are of course familiar with Mandel's earlier Marxist Economic Theory (Monthly Review, 1969), which sets out to formulate some contemporary problems of political economy in terms of Marx's analyses, while avoiding the dull reiteration of what Marx said on various topics. Despite Mandel's scholarship, he never became entrapped by boring pedantry, but enlivened the topics he treated by opening up new avenues to pursue. As we might expect, The Formation follows precisely this mode of exploration.
